Catholic Trivia:
It's Greek to Me!You know that the church is Roman Catholic ... but did you know that it gets a lot of its words from the Greeks? Here are some examples ...
Apostle: From the Greek word apostolos, which means "one sent out." Orthodox: From the words orthos and doxa, which mean "right opinion". Bible: From byblos, the word for "papyrus". (Early paper was made from papyrus.) Heterodox: Means "other opinion". Christ: A translation of the Hebrew word meshia, which means "anointed one". Bishop: From episkopos, which means "overseer". Devil: From diabolos, which means, "slanderer". Cleric: From kleros, which means "heritage". Angel: From angelos, the Greek word for "herald" or "messenger". Laity: From laos, which means "the people". Pope: From the Greek word pappas (and the Latin word papa), meaning "father". Agnostic: From agnostos
