Catholic Trivia:  It's Greek to Me!

You know that the church is Roman Catholic ... but did you know that it gets a lot of its words from the Greeks? Here are some examples ...

 

Apostle: From the Greek word apostolos, which means "one sent out."

Orthodox: From the words orthos and doxa, which mean "right opinion".

Bible: From byblos, the word for "papyrus". (Early paper was made from papyrus.)

Heterodox: Means "other opinion".

Christ: A translation of the Hebrew word meshia, which means "anointed one".

Bishop: From episkopos, which means "overseer".

Devil: From diabolos, which means, "slanderer".

Cleric: From kleros, which means "heritage".

Angel: From angelos, the Greek word for "herald" or "messenger".

Laity: From laos, which means "the people".

Pope: From the Greek word pappas (and the Latin word papa), meaning "father".

Agnostic: From agnostos
